Well… have we got just the thing for you: the Food Action Committee’s cookbook Eating By the Seasons.

This cookbook, with recipes arranged by season and featuring local ingredients, is available for $10 at the Ecology Action Centre office (2705 Fern Lane, Halifax, NS), as well as Mountain Equipment Co-op, the Grainery Food Co-op, Trident Booksellers, Local Source Market, and Home Grown Organics.  Proceeds support the work of the Food Action Committee.

And as our gift you, a recipe from the cookbook:

Turnip Puff

6 cups turnip, cubed
2 tbsp butter
2 eggs, beaten
1/4 cup flour
2 tbsp sugar
1 tbsp baking powder
salt and pepper
1 pinch nutmeg
1/2 cup bread crumbs
2 tbsp melted butter

1. Cook turnip until tender, drain and mash (by hand).

2. Add butter and eggs and beat well. (Recipe can be made to this point a day ahead.)

3. Combine flour, sugar, baking power, seasoning and nutmeg.  Stir into turnip mixture.  Pour into a buttered casserole dish.

4. Mix breadcrumbs and butter.  Sprinkle on top.  Bake at 375 F for 25 minutes or until light brown on top.

makes 6 servings.
